During the immigration process, many people seek guidance and support. Unfortunately, there are also those who take advantage of that need. Immigration scams are becoming increasingly common and often affect individuals who simply want to do things the right way.
At Multi-Help Office, we want to help you recognize the warning signs, understand how scammers operate, and learn how to protect yourself and your family.
Common Immigration Scams
Here are some of the most frequent scams:
1. Notario Fraud
n many Latin American countries, a “notario” is a licensed attorney. However, in the United States, a notary public is not authorized to provide immigration legal advice. Many present themselves as “immigration experts” and end up causing application denials, financial loss, or even deportations.
2. Fake Calls from Alleged Government Agents
Scammers pose as USCIS, ICE, or IRS officers and threaten arrest or deportation unless immediate payment is made. They can even spoof official phone numbers to look legitimate. The truth: No U.S. government agency will ever request payments by phone or through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
3. Fake Job Offers or Guaranteed Visas
Some promise “guaranteed” work visas or residency in exchange for money. The reality is: no visa or immigration process is guaranteed. Everything depends on your eligibility, not on payments to third parties.
Warning Signs of an Immigration Scam
• They only accept cash, Zelle, Venmo, or gift cards
• They promise guaranteed or unusually fast results
• They don’t provide receipts or written contracts
• They ask you to sign blank forms
• They encourage you to lie on your applications
How to Protect Yourself
• Work only with licensed immigration attorneys or representatives accredited by the Department of Justice.
• Ask for credentials and check reviews from other clients.
• Keep copies of all documents and forms.
• Never sign blank forms.
• Report any scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your state’s Attorney General’s office.
